Janice's words on the intercom urgently tell of planes puncturing the Twin Towers in New York. As I hurry up the stairs, the second plane appears to be "parking" at a slightly tilted, off center angle through a four story "garage door" slashing out the side and back walls. From every angle the videos reiterate the gaudy blossoming of orange and black flowers of death. On the half screen, one of the five sides of the Pentagon is breached. Finally, the gouged earth of Pennsylvania smolders from the TV.

Amazingly, reporters and experts seem to agree that such an attack could only have come from a "highly sophisticated, well financed organization". I don't buy it. This, to me, is a clear example of low tech destroying high tech. You remember the rubber raft with an outboard motor and two men killing a sophisticated destroyer in Yemen. This time, a handful of people with "box knives and pepper spray" took over and flew (yes, they were experienced pilots) the four craft with passengers and crew into our minds.

As we pray for those who are suffering the loss of loved ones and friends and those still trapped in the debris, let us also remember to pray for our enemies. Jesus says "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you." Matt. 5:44 Regardless of the actions of reprisal of governments and their militaries, followers of our Lord need to be disciplined in our thinking. We understand hating our enemies but rebel against the idea of loving them. We prefer an "eye for an eye".  I hate what has happened as much as anyone but the word of the Jewish Jesus is unequivocal; we are called to a higher standard.

Yours in turbulent peace,

Willie
