MMI Policy Manual

I.  National Offices

All of MMI staff except those in the offices in TX and ON should have their offices in their homes.

II.  MMI Surgical Policy - We will:

1. Allow only qualified professionals to participate directly in surgical procedures,

2. Fill in with non-OR RNs or paramedical personnel in the absence of OR professionals and,

3. Under no circumstance, allow anyone under 18 years of age in the OR.

Note:  The MMI Staff agreed unanimously to this policy during the annual Staff Conference held in Montemorelos, Mexico from August 14-19, 2000

III.  Teen Policy

From MMI Executive Committee, March 1, 2001

Goal of having young people along on an MMI trip is not to learn, but to serve.  With that in mind, the following age brackets have been suggested:

*Under age 12 - not allowed on MMI project

Age 12-14 - may come with parent or legal guardian

Age 15-17 - may come with a designated accompanying adult (letter needed from Parent)

Age 18 and over – Accepted

* MMI has and will make case by case exceptions to this rule

IV.  Travel Insurance

All MMIers are required to have emergency evacuation insurance

V.  Alternative Medicine

Chiropractors - MMI does not practice chiropractic medicine on its projects. Chiropractors are welcome as general helpers.

VI.  References for participants

MMI does not give skill references on behalf of any volunteer participant.  Any comment should be limited to a simple acknowledgement of the dates and capacity of any given volunteer.

VII.  Ransom

By Board decision, MMI will not pay any ransom for kidnapped people associated with MMI.

VIII.  Bribery Policy

MMI staff should never engage in the payment of bribes under any circumstance. ( See Related Article

IX.  Scholarships for participants

(Approved by Board of Directors March 2005)

Students in nursing, physical and occupational therapy programs and students and residents in medicine and dentistry will pay a reduced project fee. These MMIers will be authorized to serve according to their level of authorization in their country of origin.

X.  MMI Cancellation Policy

(Approved by MMI executive team on July 6, 2006)

On occasion MMI participants find it necessary to cancel from a project. MMI understands these unforeseen circumstances and our cancellation policy is as follows:

With more than 14 days notice: Your donation for the participation fee, less the application deposit of $100 US ($115 CDN), will be held on file for your next project within three years and may be refunded upon request in the same tax year.

With 8 – 14 days notice: 2/3 of your donation for the participation fee will be held on file for your next project within three years.

With 1 – 7 days notice: 1/3 of your donation for the participation fee will be held on file for your next project within three years.
