Welcome
We pray that you will feel God’s blessings and direction as you serve Him in Tanzania.

Geography
Location: Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean, between Kenya and Mozambique.

Area: slightly larger than twice the size of California.

Terrain: plains along coast; central plateau; highlands in north, south.

History
Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s.

Weather
Varies from tropical along coast to temperate in highlands.

Goverment
Republic with its capital city being Dar es Salaam
(note: some government offices have been transferred to Dodoma, which is planned as the new national capital; the National Assembly now meets there on a regular basis.)

Economy
Currency: Tanzanian shilling (TSh)
Industries: primarily agricultural processing (sugar, beer, cigarettes, sisal twine), diamond and gold mining, oil refining, shoes, cement, textiles, wood products, fertilizer, salt.
Agriculture: coffee, sisal, tea, cotton, pyrethrum (insecticide made from chrysanthemums), cashew nuts, tobacco, cloves (Zanzibar), corn, wheat, cassava (tapioca), bananas, fruits, vegetables; cattle, sheep, goats.

Project Sites
You will be working at St. Mary’s Hospital in Morogoro.  Dr. Nyka will be your host.  She is the founder of the hospital.  There is a Community Health Evangelism program that has been recently established in this region.  We will try to meet the needs of the people, both medically and spiritually, through this program.

You will be staying at the Lutheran Junior Seminary in Morogoro.  There will be dormitory style arrangements, where two people will share a room.  Electricity is 220 volts, so please bring a converter along if you are packing electrical devices.  (The current in North America is 110 volts).  Hot water is not always guaranteed, so please think about packing a solar shower if you have the room.

Important Information
The cost of this mission will be $1175.00 (USD) plus airfare unless otherwise noted.  MMI does not have the permanent facilities in Tanzania as we do in other areas (such as Honduras and the Dominican Republic), therefore the costs of setting up and completing the mission are a little higher.  Please contact Julie in the Texas office if there are any questions as we do not want the cost to affect your participation.

Please note:  There will be absolutely no smoking, drinking or the use of foul language while on this project!  We do not wish to offend those that we have come to serve.
