Philippines

Welcome
We will be sharing our love and concern for those less fortunate on the island of Mindanao at the T’Boli Evangelical Clinic in T’Boli and Bethel Baptist Hospital in Malaybalay.

Geography
Located in Southeastern Asia, to the east of Vietnam.  The Philippines is an archipelago between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea, with a land area slightly larger than the state of Arizona.

The terrain of the Philippines is mostly mountainous, with extensive narrow low-laying coastlands.

History
The Philippines were ceded by Spain to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. They attained their independence in 1946 after being occupied by the Japanese in World War II. In 1992, the US closed down its last military bases on the islands.

Weather
Tropical marine; northeast monsoon (November to April); southwest monsoon (May to October).

Goverment
A Democratic Republic with its capital city being Manila.

Economy
Currency: Philippine peso (P)
Industries: textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, wood products, food processing, electronics assembly, petroleum refining, fishing.
Agriculture: rice, coconuts, corn, sugarcane, bananas, pineapples, mangoes, pork, eggs, beef, fish.

Project Sites
Your accommodations in the Philippines will be either in a guesthouse or a modest hotel.  Detailed information will follow in your packets of information sent from the Texas office.

Electricity is 220 volts, so please remember to pack a converter if you are carrying electrical devices.  Hot showers are rare, so you may want to pack a solar shower.  Your meals will be a blend of Filipino and Western tastes – lots of fruit, veggies, rice, and different types of meat.

Both T’Boli and Malaybalay are villages located on the southern island of Mindanao.  You will work in the T’Boli Evangelical Clinic in T’Boli and Bethel Baptist Hospital in Malaybalay.  Many of the patients that you will treat will have goiters from iodine deficiency.  There will be many hernia and cleft lip cases as well.  All types of general medical/surgical supplies and medications are needed for this mission.

Important Information
The project fees for this mission are $1175.00 USD plus your airfare (unless otherwise noted).  We do not have the permanent facilities in the Philippines that we do in other locations such as the Dominican Republic and Honduras, thus the cost of setting up and completing the mission is a little higher.

Please contact Julie in the Texas office if there are any questions, as we do not want the cost of the mission to affect your participation.
