20001960 | 1970 | 1980 | 1990 | 2000+ 2000: At the American Academy of Ophthalmology/Pan American Academy meeting in Orlando, James P. Gills, MD announced his donation of a $5,000,000 matching gift through MMI. These funds were designated for the building and staffing of MMI Permanent Centers, using Santana Hospital's program as the flagship model. This was a watershed experience for MMI finances, propelling the MMI 500 vision into action and opening many doors and possibilities for establishing Christian hospitals. 2001: A large warehouse was constructed in Pennsylvania to store all the equipment, supplies and medicines and distribute them to MMI locations around the world. The Eyeglass Collection Center moved from Miami to McAllen, Texas and eyeglass collectors were directed to send glasses there for easier processing. MMI continues to need 1.2 million pairs of glasses annually. MMI’s Salud Integral and newly developed Psychiatric Services merged into one branch of ministry, forming Integrated Health Education & Counseling. Donations poured in to match the Gills Challenge Gift. Permanent Centers were seeing patients in Azerbaijan, Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. The MMI logo was updated with a new look and color. 2002: The MMI family pressed on in a world affected by the events of 9/11/01. Paul and Carol Yoder announced a two-for-one challenge gift of $200,000 for Patron Fund donations, which cover the vital day-to-day operations of MMI. 2003: A record number of 1578 North American volunteers worked directly on 71 projects around the world during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2003. 2004: Volunteers schedule their annual working vacations to the growing number of MMI destinations.
