1995-19991960 | 1970 | 1980 | 1990 | 2000+ The importance of public health teaching grew as the Salud Integral program trained additional workers for Honduras and Ecuador as well as the Dominican Republic. Brian Piecuch, International Director, and David Peterson, North American Director, joined as leadership staff. As many as 1500 participants came annually from the USA and Canada; and the same number of volunteers were estimated from the countries where MMI served. An estimated 250,000 patients were served each year through the short-term programs and established clinics. The MMI budget continued to be break-even with no cushion for emergencies. Veteran participants were burdened for the patients who had no care between annual visits. Willie Hunter challenged the board and staff with the vision of MMI 500. This would mean five hundred MMI Permanent Centers, modeled after the established work at Santana Hospital, in the next 50 years. The work was just beginning as land soon became available in several countries. |
