Hurricanes David and Frederick hit the island of Hispañola in September. "David" was 200 miles wide and La Posada was directly in the path. The Shannons and Hunters were in residence and a general medical team had just departed. The battered Posada held and the families were safe, but the destruction to the entire area was complete. Many people and animals were killed and homes ruined. All the outlying buildings at Posada were destroyed and the surgical trailer was washed back up on the beach.

People straggled to Posada where medicines and food were distributed. Wounds were cleaned and closed. Immediately after the storm, 10,000 mailgrams went out to MGM participants and CMS members from John Paul, MD, Chairman of the MGM Commission, and donations poured in. Helpers came in from North America as travel permitted and about 400 people were involved in assisting the people of the area.
