John Shannon was named Director of Medical Group Missions, the new self-supporting short-term missions opportunity for CMS members and others. The first clinics were held in a school and local churches were alerted that doctors would be coming. The basic, adaptable structure for setting up the clinic, crowd control and seeing patients in an orderly fashion became the model for MGM and, later, MMI. The first MGM team had a rewarding experience. Patients were examined and treated with sample medications organized in paper sacks.

The Vice President of Honduras, a Christian ENT doctor, secured an official invitation to MGM/CMS for a medical brigade and a local committee was formed in La Ceiba. LaMar and Kathy Stauffer, Mennonite missionaries in the Dominican Republic, worked as translators and organizers. The La Ceiba projects were held each March, involving large teams with medicine, surgery, dentistry and ophthalmology.

All MGM programs through the years were completely financed through donations and participation fees without subsidy from Christian Medical Society.
